Highlights from 5 days based in Torridon

Dunkeld, Scottish Highlands, Scottish tours with walks, small group adventures, Roaming Scotland.jpg

Travel days to a distant destination can be tedious, unless interspersed with lots of walks. Exploring every nook and cranny of Dunkeld charmed with its white-washed houses and cathedral ruins beside the huge larches and the tranquil flow of the broad River Tay. After lunch, we hiked some pathless terrain in the Rothiemurchus forest to reach the summit of a hill that gives one of the most atmospheric views of this ancient Caledonian pine forest set against the backdrop of the misty grey Cairngorm Mountains.

With a worsening weather forecast over the coming week, we opted to ascend the nearby Beinn Damh next day. We experienced two worlds: the lower one of the steep Torridon Mountains dramatically descending into a sea loch; the upper one rising into the ethereal world of cloud.
