FAQs

What should I pack?  For standard 'Tour & Trek' walks, wear boots or shoes you are comfortable walking in, wear two pairs of socks, bring a waterproof jacket and trousers and layers. At our warmest time of year, our temperatures are an average of 15C / 59F and there is often rain.  For extra comfort, we recommend bringing spare shoes and socks to change back into in the minivan. Most of our trips require a packed lunch and plenty of fluid, unless otherwise stated.

For our more serious hiking excursions and multi-day trips, a packing list will be sent you.

What if I'm not so into hiking?  We appreciate that walking perhaps only appeals to one person and not the other when traveling together. We aim to strike a happy balance wherever possible by offering an alternative option- which could be visiting a castle, museum, distillery, shop, cafe/pub or simply chill time in front of an incredible view. We'll pick you up and regroup once the others have finished their hike.

What’s included in the cost? minivan, driver, fully qualified and insured walking guide, 8-9+ hours of Tour & Trek, collection and drop off from Edinburgh, Glasgow or Stirling as specified on the excursion.

All ferry charges and many admission fees are included in the excursion price and stated in the excursion details. Food and refreshments are excluded.

What’s distinctive about Roaming Scotland? It’s our ‘Tour & trek’ that makes us distinctive.

Are children welcome? Children are welcome if capable of hiking up to 8 kms/day. If your child is less than 1.35m tall, you should let us know, so we can provide a suitable booster seat. For private parties, children are welcome who do not meet the above criterior.

Flexibility of a tour? With consultation on the day, tours might be modified, or the order of the itinerary adjusted, to take into account weather or tides.

Do you do hotel pickups in the departure cities? Usually we pick you up from your accommodation depending on numbers booked on the tour. We will inform you during our correspondence.

When should I get to our meeting point? Please plan to arrive 10 minutes before departure. Due to waiting restrictions, we can't wait for you if you're late.

What happens if I'm late or miss the tour? If you miss the minibus because you’re late, our cancellation policy applies.

Full payment of a multi-day excursion is to be made 60 days before the commencement of the trip. Day trips are to be paid for at the time of the booking.

What is your cancellation policy? For all one-day and multi-day tours, the following cancellation charges shall apply (depending on the effective date of cancellation):-

  • More than 28 days before the tour date: you will be charged 25% of the total price of your tour and 100% of the value of the accommodation booked by us when paid in advance, or in accordance with the accommodation cancellation policies.

  • Cancellation less than 28 days before the tour date: we shall be entitled to charge the full amount of the price paid by you in respect of your tour unless we agree (entirely at our discretion) to pay you a partial refund. We will advise you of our decision on this upon receiving your cancellation notice.

In the very unlikely event Roaming Scotland cancels the trip and one of our associate tour and hike organisations are unable to run this trip, then a full refund will be given. Refunds will not be given when an alternative operator will run this trip and you choose not to go.

What about travel insurance? We advise you take out travel insurance especially to cover cancellation of your trip.

When does a trip have a guaranteed departure? Once we have received confirmation of your deposit for your tour booking.

We regret that you can’t pre-book a specific seat

We’ll make regular comfort breaks.

Do we need to bring our own lunch? You will need to on the excursions where this is specified. For other tours, you can bring a packed lunch if you want to. However there are cafes and shops to choose from en route.
