Scotland Tours & Walks - Bothy Overnighters
A true adventure in the Scottish wilds
Departing from the beaten track for the hardcore! Rates from £230 per person for 2 days, including transport, food and guide.
Martin will guide you on a trek into the remote hills to sleep in a bothy - a basic stone cottage without furnishings. This appeals to those who want to get back to basics. Sleeping on floors, or wooden shelves might be Spartan, but the Swiss fondue and a dram of whisky will be truly savoured as the mist rolls in around the hills at the close of day. Marvel at the total silence and the absence of light pollution. Looking out on a clear night to the dark mountains etched on a starry night sky, will be unforgettable. Day two offers the possibilities of climbing a nearby summit, whether a Munro (hill over 3,000 feet) or a Corbett (over 2,500 feet), or just enjoying an exploration of the wilds before returning to the bothy to pick up the backpacks and trek out. Details of the bothy with distances will be given at the time of enquiry.
Ability: As these are backpack expeditions, a good standard of fitness is required to manage a full-sized backpack and carry a share of the camping equipment. Our trips are not about speed, but you will have to go the distance from 10-25 kms in a day. Our aim though is have a quality and thoroughly inspirational experience. An equipment list will be provided.
Scottish Mountain Summits
Be guided to a Mountain Summit - Rates from £95pp/day including transport and guide.
A single day’s hike up into the Scottish hills from Glasgow, Edinburgh or Stirling.
Package includes pickup and drop off at your accommodation. Specify where you want to go, or alternatively, describe the length of walk and grading to allow us to choose the right one for you. It’s possible to climb a hill further into the Highlands (costs will be determined by distance from Edinburgh/Glasgow).
Outings can include an overnight on a wild camping expedition, or multi-day with camping, hostel or B&B possibilities (costings for these variations upon request). Also see ‘Dates & Offers’
Tripadvisor Reviews: 5 star rating of excellence
Excellence in expertise and enjoyment “This was a day to get out on some hills with safe and knowledgeable route selection and excellent conversation throughout. Very enjoyable and responding to individual requirements. Thank you Martin and Sparky!”
“It was such a cracking day! We went on a day trip to climb a pathless hill (Creag Uchdag ). Martin is a really great guide, he showed me how to use a compass and a map and was testing my skills along the way. He has a lot of stories to tell and knows so much about Scotland! The views were fantastic and there was almost nobody else around. A perfect way to get away from the crowds and enjoy nature. We were lucky enough to come across a big herd of deer as well. I have never climbed a pathless hill before so it was a good lesson and a great adventure. If you want to explore the Scottish wilderness, Roaming Scotland would be a perfect way to do so!”

Walking with Roaming Scotland
We offer two types of hiking with different grading systems to indicate their level of difficulty.:
The Hill Hikes are obviously more challenging. These require a degree of ability and fitness. If this is your interest, scroll up to ‘Mountain Summits’ on this page.
The ‘Tour & Trek’ hikes fall in the easier category, and are about being able and sure-footed. Distances are generally between 2 - 8 kilometres (1-5 miles), mostly on paths, but sometimes across rough ground. When shorter walks are featured, we would aim to do 2 to 3 a day. Some hikes include hill walking (but nothing technical or high). Sometimes we can offer an alternative to walking for those who more want to amble. So when possible, we can drop you to shop, or to visit a museum, castle, distillery or a café and then do a pick up when the rest of the group have finished their hike.
Safety and expertise are paramount - Martin has done the Mountain Leader training and attained the relevant award qualification as a summer mountain leader guide. He holds a current Mountain First Aid certificate and is fully insured.
Our excursions include ‘Sparkie’, our well-behaved and friendly collie dog.

Four of us (all adults) spent seven days touring northern Scotland and Sky with Martin Haworth as our guide. It was our first time visiting Scotland and he made everything easy by planning accommodations, places to eat, attractions and hikes. He even picked us up in Glasgow. Our group had eclectic interests and every day was a balanced itinerary of visiting ancient sites, castles, tiny fishing villages and hiking, eating and shopping. He adjusted our schedule as new opportunities came along such as a visit to the out-of-the-way unmarked place where Gavin Maxwell lived when he kept the otters featured in his book, Ring of Bright Water. That became a kind of pilgrimage for me. I can't imagine finding many of the places we visited without Martin and it was particularly nice that he could talk about what we were seeing. Throughout our trip he remained good-humored and kind, really an ideal and trustworthy traveling companion who made every day feel safe and easy. I can't imagine a better person to see northern Scotland with.
The Hidden Gems of Scotland
If you want to discover the true natural and cultural riches of Scotland, I suggest you look no further than Roaming Scotland. I’ve been on a number of treks with Martin, who can always be relied upon to introduce you to extraordinary landscapes in off-the-beaten-track destinations. Martin’s warm, unassuming and capable manner make him the ideal small group guide. His trips are impeccably well organised (with every detail taken care of) while still leaving plenty of scope for spontaneity. And Martin’s knowledge of Scotland, its landscape and its history is a font that you will definitely want to tap during your trip. A wee side note for anyone who may be afraid of dogs: I defy even the most terrified to not to be won over by Roaming Scotland’s dog Sparkie! I’m not very confident around dogs, but Sparkie is the most placid and gentle animal I have ever encountered; he has a HUGE fan club!!
Hiking Isle of Lewis
I'd never expected to see such an amazing place like the Isle of Lewis. It was a wonderful experience to do a hiking around this place. The most important that Martin is a experimented and equipped guide. He knows very well the place like the palm of his hand and also he is always concerned about the tourists. If you have questions about historical places or even if you spent so much time taking a lot of pictures he is always happy to wait and help. If you are looking for an amazing tour I really recommend you"Roaming Scotland".
Great Trip, Great Company
I really enjoyed a trip to Orkney, travelling up from Edinburgh, soaking in Martin's vast knowledge about Scotland and it's many tales. He was excellent company, which made the trip very comfortable, and has many great stories of his own which were really entertaining. Martin managed to make me feel very at home everywhere we went which i think is a sign of his great hospitality, even in the most remote places. I would definitely recommend booking a trip as soon as you can!
I had the pleasure of joining one of Martin’s groups on a sail down Loch Ness. Such idyllic surroundings for a sail, made even more enjoyable with the Scottish weather spoiling us with sunshine and blue skies. Whilst these maybe weren’t ideal conditions for actual sailing, Martin’s easy going and friendly manner helped us relax and enjoy our boat trip. A day of sunshine, good food, pleasant sailing, beautiful scenery and great company - what more could you ask for?
Martin took us to Arran and surrounding islands on a cycling tour which was amazing fun! We cycled round each island and hopped on and off the ferries in between, whilst camping overnight. Hard work but absolutely fantastic time. Some spectacular views, amazing weather and even got a bonfire on the beach. Martin is a very approachable and friendly guide and would definitely recommend and use again if touring around Scotland.
An Experience not to Miss
I have been on the best two expeditions with Martin. His high spirits, passion for Scotland, fun-loving nature along with his wide knowledge of Scotland makes any adventure the best one! Scotland is undoubtedly one of the best scenic places you'll ever be to and having a guide such as Martin to show you the best of Scotland is a must to make the most of this beautiful place. So here's 5 out of 5 just for you Martin! Thank you so much for the wonderful experience of Scotland!
A Refreshing Time
We’ve been on two trips with Martin and have thoroughly enjoyed both. His knowledge of the areas and passion for the Scottish countryside shine through - a thoroughly enjoyable break that I’d recommend to anyone, especially if you want to combine some outdoor activity with getting to know the country a bit better.
Balm for the Soul
I have now been on several trips with Martin (including sailing the Great Glen) and every one of them have been brilliant experiences. I find Scotland’s wild landscapes to be tonic to my soul and Martin is the perfect guide if you want to thoroughly soak it all in. I also find Martin’s trips lend themselves very well to photography - from the calm shores of a loch up to far higher ground above, there is always a great picture to be taken. Martin has such an extensive and yet intimate knowledge of Scotland’s mountains, valleys and lochs - it is always a joy to be led by him.
Authentic & Unique Adventure
I went to the Isle of Skye on an adventure organised by Martin, it was an amazing experience and a lot of fun. Martin is a brilliant guide who is always in good spirits and brings a unique wealth of experience on Scotland's outdoors. His experience meant we got to see many places in Skye that are off the beaten track and that I would never have seen otherwise, an impressive achievement on an Isle that is so busy with tourism. Roaming Scotland will give you an authentic taste of what this country has to offer!
Wonderful Memories, Stunning Places
I've been on quite a few trips with Martin - hiking along the shores of lochs, rowing across them, cycling around the Isle of Skye, and sailing across Loch Ness - and every time it's like being inside a 'Visit Scotland' advert: you'll get to visit some of the most beautiful, out-of-the-way places that Scotland can offer, and what a stunning country it is! Martin is an ideal guide - his love of the great outdoors and interest in the history behind the places he takes you to are contagious. He's also very professional and I've always felt safe adventuring on trips with him. Highly recommended!
True Experience of Scotland
I went to a few trips organised by Martin and I can highly recommend it. Martin showed us some amazing places I would never discover by myself. He's also really fun and experienced guide. If you're looking for a guide that will show you some beautiful yet not touristy places, Martin and Sparky are the perfect choice!
I went on a group sailing trip led by Martin along the Caledonian canal from Loch Lochy up to Drumnadrochit. I’d never been sailing before and Martin was great at teaching us all and giving us all a go at different things. It was so much fun and the atmosphere on board was really friendly and relaxed. This is a great route for beginners and it was absolutely stunning sailing through the lochs and taking in the beautiful mountain-scenery around us. Martin has in-depth geographical and historical knowledge of the area, taking us on trips to hidden attractions such as breathtaking waterfalls. The whole experience of learning to sail created a fun and encouraging team-spirit on board and I made lots of new friends. I had a really wonderful time and would thoroughly recommend this trip to others. I can’t wait to go again!
A Perfect Adventure
Martin is a fantastic guide - thoughtful, organised, adventurous, knowledgeable and spontaneous. He has a fantastic knowledge of Scotland and we discovered some of the most picturesque and special places/islands through trusting his recommendation of where to explore. Sparkie (the dog) was a welcome and enthusiastic addition to our group! Martin looked after the safety aspects of our trip, and we could trust him fully. I cannot fault him, or how special a holiday in lesser known Scotland is. I have no hesitation in recommending Roaming Scotland!
Adventures Exploring Scotland
I have taken part in two week-long team sailing trips and a climb of Ben Nevis and have thoroughly enjoyed each adventure. Martin is a friendly leader, who ensures the trips are relaxed and flexible yet are planned in detail to make the most of the trip and ensure everyone is very well looked after.
If you haven't already signed up for a Scottish adventure with "Roaming Scotland" then I would advise you to do so...and fast! With a guide who could show Bear Grylls a thing or two and who has a wealth of knowledge about this beautiful country, then you certainly won't want to miss out! I thoroughly enjoyed my time exploring the wonders of Bonnie Scotland and wouldn't hesitate to sign up for another tour....so Get Roaming! It's called the Land of the Brave for a reason!
